Presentation

Network access must be free for the entire academic community, allowing uninterrupted access to pedagogical content and the various services provided by the institution. IPT aims to maximize knowledge through a single platform for the entire institution.

This project aims to demonstrate the wireless network configuration and assist in solving IT problems. Use the links below to navigate through the support sections:

e-U Initiative ("Campus" Virtual)

The e-U Initiative – "Campus" Virtual emerged in the early 2000s as a strategic response to the growing need to provide higher education institutions with integrated digital infrastructures, capable of supporting mobility, information access, electronic services, and network learning. The "Campus" Virtual concept assumed not only teaching and academic management platforms but also ubiquitous network access, regardless of the physical location within the institution.

In this context, wireless connectivity (Wi-Fi) became one of the fundamental pillars of the "Campus" Virtual, allowing students, teachers, and researchers to access digital resources in libraries, classrooms, university residences, and common spaces. However, in an early stage, this access was often limited to each "campus", requiring distinct local authentications and hindering inter-institutional mobility.

The natural evolution of the e-U Initiative thus led to the need for a federated model of authentication and network access, capable of overcoming institutional and geographical boundaries. It is at this point that eduroam (education roaming) emerges as an extension and consolidation of the virtual "campus" principles. Since 2002, Portugal took its first steps in eduroam by participating in the initial group of pioneer countries of the European project, and between 2004 and 2006, the Wi-Fi infrastructures developed under e-U began to be progressively integrated into eduroam.

eduroam materializes the e-U vision by allowing any member of a participating institution — student, teacher, or researcher — to use the same institutional credentials to access the wireless network on any other participating "campus", whether nationally or internationally. This approach eliminates access fragmentation, reinforcing the idea of a continuous digital academic space, regardless of location.

"The e-U initiative encourages and facilitates the production, access, and sharing of knowledge within and outside the University."

Mobility Service

The project (Education Roaming) has the main objective of providing the European academic community with a mobility service between university "campi".
