FAQ

Should I use eduroam CAT or the geteduroam app?

Both tools serve the same purpose: to configure your device to securely connect to the eduroam Wi-Fi network. The main difference lies in the delivery method and ease of use:

  • geteduroam (The modern option): An application designed to simplify the process ("Next, Next, Finish"). It is the standard and recommended solution for smartphones (especially Android 11+ and iOS 15+) and recent Windows systems, as it automatically handles newer security protocols.
  • eduroam CAT (The classic method): The original web portal-based tool where you download an installation file. It is ideal for computers with macOS, Linux distributions, or older operating systems, where installing an app is not desired (or possible).

If you are on a smartphone or tablet, use the geteduroam app. If you are on a computer (Mac, Linux, or older Windows) and prefer not to install an app, eduroam CAT remains an excellent option.

Which network (SSID) should I connect to?

The official network for the entire academic community and visitors from other institutions is eduroam. You may also find a setup network (e.g., IPT-Guest or eduroam-setup), which serves only for temporary internet access to download the configuration application.

What security and encryption method is supported at IPT?

The eduroam network at the Instituto Politécnico de Tomar uses the PEAP protocol with MS-CHAP-V2 or TLS. If you use the automatic configuration assistant (geteduroam or Eduroam CAT), these parameters are filled in automatically.

Why do I need to install a certificate?

The security certificate ensures that your device is connecting to the legitimate servers of the Instituto Politécnico de Tomar and not to a "rogue" network disguised as eduroam. It is a guarantee that your credentials will not be stolen.

What is roaming access?

The eduroam network is a global service. This means that with your IPT email and password, you can automatically access Wi-Fi at thousands of universities and research centers worldwide without needing to ask for new passwords.

I changed my password and the Wi-Fi stopped working. What should I do?

Your computer or phone is trying to connect with the old password that was saved. You should go to your device's Wi-Fi settings, select the eduroam network, choose "Forget this network," and reconnect by entering your new password.

Why do I only need to enter my login/password once?

After the first successful authentication, your operating system (Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android) saves your credentials in an encrypted and secure manner on the device. For subsequent access, the connection is made automatically in the background.

I can't connect at all. How do I solve this?

First, make sure your operating system and network card drivers are up to date. We always recommend using the automatic configuration tool available on our website. If the problem persists, please contact our services (refer to the Help section).
